When Should You Replace Your Kitchen Appliances?

Updated: Nov 2, 2022

Any household item will surely give up after some time. With most home appliances like refrigerators, washing machines, dishwashers, etc., you can expect a long life as they tend to be durable.

Regular maintenance can prolong a home appliance’s life, but if you start noticing some odd functionalities, then it might be time for an upgrade. Preserving your household items clean and in order, getting them fixed, or replacing a part or two is a common thing to do, but now and again, you need an upgrade.

Is your refrigerator making a strange sound, or perhaps your range is taking a bit too long to heat up? Do your dishes come out dirty after they’ve been in the dishwasher? In this article, we’re going over the most common signs that show when your kitchen appliances need replacement.

Washer and Dryer

Washers and dryers’ most common issue is leakage. Homeowners shouldn’t ignore puddles or pools of liquid on the ground as they are a sure sign that something’s malfunctioning.

Keeping an eye on your energy bill can also show you if your washer or dryer is putting in extra work to compensate for an ongoing issue. If your water bill suddenly jumps compared to the previous month, it could be caused by a leaking appliance.

Don’t forget to use your ears as well. For both machines, constant excessive noise may point out that the appliance is starting to wear. To make sure your washing machine isn’t simply overloaded, you should try washing smaller loads and make sure the distribution is even before you turn the washer on.

Refrigerator

Refrigerators are an essential part of any kitchen, which is why they can easily be taken for granted. If you pay attention, though, you can prevent major problems from developing further on.

If your fridge has excessive condensation, it may not be cooling properly. What you can do in such a scenario is look at the rubber sealing around the door and see if there are water droplets or signs of mildew.

Moreover, if the back of your refrigerator feels warm, you should check and see if the motor is running properly. Excessive heat can be an indication that your coils need replacement. If that doesn’t work, then you may need to replace the appliance altogether.

Dishwasher

Dishwashers are lifesavers, especially if you’ve got tons of dishes after every meal with your family.

Nonetheless, if yours is older and doesn’t work effectively, it can make matters much more difficult. If you’re rinsing your dishes to the point where they don’t need washing anymore, then there’s something that needs your attention.

Loud noises are a sure sign of telling when a dishwasher is in a struggle. When your appliance is making strange noises, overheating, overcooling, leaks, or gives a funny smell, all of this means that it’s time for a repair or replacement.

Stove and Oven

Things that operate with fire shouldn’t be overlooked. A stone and oven’s average lifespan is around 15 years and sometimes longer if you opt for a gas range.

Nevertheless, if at any time you notice the stove taking too much time to heat up, you should inspect it. For gas stoves, if the flame isn’t blue and flickers, try cleaning the grates and burner caps. However, if it’s clean, you may need to replace it.

You may also want to look for a new appliance if the buttons are no longer functioning or if your electric stove’s glass gets cracked as it may not be safe for you to cook on.

Microwave

Microwaves aren’t as essential as a fridge, but many people have them in their homes. Since they’re not that expensive, you shouldn’t postpone buying a new one as it’s a household item that is used daily.

If your microwave isn’t cooking properly and emits smoke, sparks, or burning smells, it’s time to replace it. Working keys are also essential to a microwave. If the buttons on your appliance no longer work, you should buy a new one.

All things considered, buying a new one will probably save you time and money rather than going through the struggle of replacing parts of an inefficient one.

Don't Compromise

Most kitchen appliances will last you 10 to 15 years, depending on your use. So, if something goes wrong after 10 years, you can expect more problems to arise. Even if you get your item repaired, there’s still a high chance that it will break in the future.

If you’ve gotten more than 15 years out of an appliance and it needs to be fixed, be grateful that it lasted that long and simply buy a new one. Having a malfunctioning appliance can pose a health risk to you and your family.
