The Guide to Home Lighting (Part 2)
In Part 2 of our guide to interior lighting, we will delve much deeper into the (oh-so subjective) world of lighting design. By understanding light-based layering and placement techniques and exploring advanced lighting design strategies, you'll have the stepping stones to creating a well-balanced and visually appealing lighting scheme in your home.
We will also discuss the importance of lighting controls and how to optimize the use of lighting fixtures to enhance your space. Remember – the key is ‘balance!’
Task Lighting
As the name suggests, task lighting focuses on specific activities and provides localized, directed light to aid in performing tasks effectively and (obviously) without any roadblocks. Areas such as the kitchen, home office, or reading nooks benefit greatly from task lighting.

It’s of utmost importance that you identify the areas that necessitate task lighting, such as those above countertops, desks, or reading areas. Install specific fixtures like pendant lights, under-cabinet lights, or desk lamps to provide focused illumination for these activities.
Some folks may opt for task lighting fixtures with adjustable heads, arms, or brightness levels. This added flexibility allows you to direct the light precisely where needed, avoiding any pesky shadows and glare!
Ambient Lighting
Ambient lighting provides overall illumination and can be considered the foundation of your lighting design. Think of it as a “guidance point” that ensures the room is well-lit and comfortable to move around in. Common sources of ambient lighting include ceiling-mounted fixtures, recessed lights, or even natural light from windows, which is why you should be mindful of distribution and control.

Distribute your ambient lighting fixtures evenly throughout the room to eliminate any dark corners or shadows. This ensures a consistent level of brightness and a welcoming atmosphere. Additionally, consider installing dimmer switches for your ambient lighting fixtures to control the light’s intensity. Dimming the lights allows you to create a soft, relaxed ambiance for cozy evenings or adjust the brightness for lively gatherings.
Accent Lighting
Whenever you need highlighting for specific architectural features, artwork, or decorative objects, your attention should be targeted toward accent lighting. The focal point brings depth, visual interest, and an extra layer of ambiance to your space.
The key to accent lighting is within “identification” and “ambiance.” Identify areas or objects to draw attention to, such as artwork, sculptures, or architectural elements like textured walls or niches. Use adjustable spotlights, track lighting, or wall-mounted fixtures to highlight these points of interest effectively.

Layering with ambient lighting can be summed up as a game of “combination” – creating a balanced effect with negative space and highlighted items. Use accent lighting to add an extra illumination layer and draw focus, while ambient lighting provides a general glow and fills the room!
Mirrors and Lighting
Ever thought about incorporating mirrors strategically to amplify natural and artificial light? Placing mirrors across from windows or near light sources helps bounce light around the room, making the space feel brighter and more spacious.

For example, you could place a mirror in a dimly lit hallway to reflect light and create the illusion of a larger space. Additionally, combining carefully-placed mirrors with accent lighting can create a stunning visual effect, with the light reflecting off the mirror's surface and adding an extra layer of illumination to the room.
Dimmers and Controls
As previously mentioned, it’s worth taking a look at dimmer switches and lighting controls. They give you flexibility in adjusting the brightness levels according to your needs and the desired mood.

Dimmers also allow you to create various lighting scenes and adapt the atmosphere of a room to different occasions. Whether you want a cozy and intimate setting or bright and energetic lighting for a gathering, dimmers provide the freedom to customize the lighting according to your preferences.
